Community Space for Everyone - Help Us Build It

Our club is embarking on an exciting and much-needed project: the development of a modern, multi-functional community meeting space that will serve as a welcoming hub for local activities, events, meetings and initiatives for years to come.

This new facility will provide a warm, adaptable and energy-efficient indoor space, fully accessible to people of all abilities. Importantly, it will include the only disability-accessible toilet on our facilities, ensuring that everyone can participate fully in club and community life.

Why This Project Matters

At the heart of this project is a simple goal: to bring people together.

The new space will:

  • Support community engagement, social inclusion and rural development

  • Provide a high-quality, flexible meeting space for community groups, sports clubs and local organisations

  • Offer a dedicated indoor venue for training sessions, workshops, meetings and social gatherings – regardless of the weather

  • Enhance local infrastructure by creating a sustainable, accessible and future-proof facility

  • Potentially support remote working or community initiatives as needs evolve

A Club at the Heart of the Community

Our facilities are shared by:

  • Adult Men’s GAA

  • Ladies Adult and Underage GAA

  • Underage Lilliput Gaels

  • Loughnavalley GAA Healthy Club

Through the GAA Healthy Club programme, our aim is to make the club a true “hub for health” – open to everyone in the community, not just players.

We are extremely proud that in 2024 we were the only Healthy Club in Westmeath to receive the National Silver Award, and we successfully maintained this standard again in 2025.

Growing Activities – Limited by the Weather

The Healthy Club runs a wide range of inclusive activities, including:

  • Dads & Lads Gaelic Football, with participants aged from 35 to 76. Sessions take place every Sunday morning and are followed by tea and coffee to encourage social connection – but currently this depends entirely on the weather.

  • A Women’s Walking Group, promoting physical activity and social wellbeing.

  • Petanque, aimed at the wider community and particularly welcoming to retired members.

These activities take place weekly and are followed by tea and coffee, but without an indoor space, they are often disrupted by poor weather. A warm, welcoming room would allow participants to gather safely before activities, warm up together, and socialise afterwards – something that is currently not possible.

With this new space, we also plan to introduce:

  • Workshops and talks on first aid, mental health, healthy eating and wellbeing

  • Community information sessions

  • Community activities: host community games events, yoga and other exercise inititaives

  • Secure indoor storage for Healthy Club equipment

Designed with Accessibility and Dignity in Mind

Planning permission for this project was approved in December 2025. The approved modular design includes:

  • Full disability access

  • A large full-length glass frontage, allowing elderly or mobility-impaired members to watch matches indoors, seated and comfortable, regardless of the weather

  • A disability-accessible toilet and baby-changing facility, both of which are currently unavailable on site
